Earthquake
by Ertan Karpazli

Should the earth not quake,
Mountains would not rise,
Clouds would not form,
And valleys would be dry,
The land would be dead,
And stomachs would be bare,
And the pains of hunger
Would drive man to despair,
Yet man begs for crops,
For mercy and for life,
How ungrateful he is,

And impatient during strife,
Then he looks in himself,
To see what he is,
And considers the law
As if it is his,
So he competes in vain,
Trying to reach the stars,
And the rain he creates
Only burns and scars,
Still he looks at his work,
With a heart full of pride,

Till the earth quakes again,
Or he’s faced with a tide,
And all that he built,
Is razed to the ground,
While the mountains stand firm,
And the valleys remain sound,
Would he be as the earth,
Rising up when shaken?
Or has he closed his eyes
And vowed not to awaken?
Thus his world becomes barren
Because he refused
To lift up his hands
And say “Ya Allah, I lose!”
So blessings could run
Amid his fingers like streams,
Cultivating his heart
Like a desert turned green.
