Tazmin Mahomed is the mother of four kids, a writer, poet, volunteer counselor and a business woman. I have always loved expressing myself through the medium of poetry as I truly believe that poetry is the only language of the heart.
She lives in Durban, South Africa and is a Muslim woman of Indian origin; our families have been living in South Africa for three generations now. Thus, I am as South African as everyone else in this Rainbow Nation. I, like many other Muslim women living in Western societies have been plagued with the issue of identity. Prior to writing my book I had never adopted a Muslim identity in public; I chose rather to fit into mainstream society.
In January of 2009 she attended a spiritual retreat weekend, she realize at the retreat that she was spiritually sleeping and that she had not invited her Creator within her heart, thus her reluctance to adopt her true Muslim identity. At the retreat she started to reflect on the condition of her heart and on the strength of her belief. As she wrote these reflections she took herself out of this spiritual slumber.
Her book Secrets of a Muslim Heart, describes this journey of adopting her true Muslim identity, this journey into spiritual awakening. It is written in the medium of both poetry and prose. This book is dedicated to fellow sisters, seeking change, seeking hidden treasures. Tazmin truly believe that this is not only her journey, but our journey, not only my book, but our book.
She writes, “We are all heading towards the one and only Allah, and we need each other to help us to move closer to Him!”
