2011 IWA 1st Annual Non-Fiction Writing Contest
The IWA is pleased to announce that the Zakat Foundation of America is co-sponsoring this contest.
Contest Theme:A Muslim’s Responsibility to Neighbors and Community.
The essay may be about an actual community project that addresses a specific problem(s) or it can be a hypothetical community project that would address a specific problem(s). The essay should include the importance of neighbors in your community.
Maximum word count is 1,200 words.
Submissions: October 15, 2011 through November 8, 2011.
Young adults wanting to participate (13 years through 17 years) must have a parent or legal guardian submit the essay.
Categories:Adult Muslim -Public, IWA Member, and Young Adult Muslim (ages 13 yrs. - 17 yrs.).
Copyright of the essay will remain with the writer.
By submitting the essay the writer gives his or her permission to the IWA to publish the essay in its IWA Magazine, on its web site or at some future date in an anthology that would be published.
There will be no compensation for the submission other than 1st place winners in each of the three categories listed.
Essay Formatting Guidelines:
The essay will be evaluated on whether the directions were followed or not:
· Times New Roman font style, 12 inch font size, 1 inch margins top, bottom, and both sides, no graphics in the essay, single spaced, 1/2 inch paragraph indent, no headers or footers and no page numbers. Do not type your name or contact information on the essay document.
Submission Directions:
· Include your legal name, mailing address, email address, telephone number, and the title of your essay and category in the body of an email.
· In the Subject line of the email type - 2011 IWA Writing Contest.

Judging Criteria:

Writing skills – correct formatting and correct spelling, grammar, punctuation, etc.

Writing style – how well developed and coherent is it.

Creativity – how original is the idea presented.
|

Relatedness – is the essay on topic.
|
|
Persuasive Edge – How convincing is the essay overall.
