About Islamic Ink

Islamic Ink is the free quarterly online magazine of the Islamic Writers Alliance. The magazine serves as both a writer’s magazine and literary showcase. Content includes news about IWA and its members, happenings in the writing and publishing industry, advice for writers, interviews, book reviews, essays, fiction and poetry. All IWA members and associates are eligible to contribute to Islamic Ink.

Submission Guidelines for Writers

Requirements

You must be a member or associate of the Islamic Writers Alliance in order to submit content to Islamic Ink. 

The Submission Process

All submissions must be made by email.  Include your name, e-mail address, and a short author biography in third person (100 words maximum) with your submission.  Specify the category (see the list below) for which you are submitting.

Please include the year you wrote your piece for the copyright line.

Paste your submission in the body of the e-mail message, or attach your document to the email as a .doc or .rtf file.

The subject line of your e-mail must include the words "Islamic Ink Submission."

E-mail your submission to Amina Benlafquih, IWA Publications Officer at magazine@islamicwritersalliance.net.

Categories

The Tip Off:  
We print one or two articles per issue on writing, editing, marketing, or publishing (between 400 and 800 words). 

Spotlight IWA:
Each issue features interviews with two IWA members to highlight their recent successes and illuminate their future projects.  If interested in writing for this section, please contact Amina Benlafquih, IWA Publications Officer, at magazine@islamicwritersalliance.net , to request the name of an interview subject.  Submit the article in Q & A format (between 1000 and 2000 words).  Please provide a sidebar for Cultural Connections (see next listing).

Cultural Connections:
A sidebar (up to 300 words) that accompanies a Spotlight IWA interview and features interesting facts about the featured member’s cultural heritage or country/city of residence. A favorite recipe related to this topic may be submitted, or a link provided.

Book Review
We accept one review per issue of non-fiction, fiction and poetry books. Preference will be given to reviews of books published within the past two years.  Please submit only one review (750 words or less).

Reflections:
We publish two essays (or flash non-fiction pieces) per issue. Articles dealing with writing experiences and epiphanies are most likely to be accepted.  Please submit one full-length article (700 words or less) or up to two flash non-fiction pieces.

Short Fiction:
We publish two short-fiction or flash fiction stories per issue.  Please submit only one story (2,500 words or less) or two flash fiction stories (300 words or less) each submission period.

Poetry
We print two poems per issue.  You may submit up to two poems (50 lines or less) each submission period.

Terms and Payment

At this time Islamic Writers Alliance offers no payment for material printed in Islamic Ink. All submissions are voluntary. What you will get from submitting to the magazine are the following benefits:

  • a published credit to your byline,

  • a link from the bulletin to your blog, web site and/or books, if available, and

  • increased exposure for you as a writer.

Copyright

Contributors to Islamic Ink retain full copyright. Islamic Ink only asks for non-exclusive electronic rights. Typically, this includes publication in a single issue of the online magazine.

Reprints

You may submit reprints to Islamic Ink, but please obtain permission from the publication which originally published your work.  Include that information with your submission. We do not reprint work that has already been published in IWA Anthologies.

The IWA publishes its magazine four times a year.  The deadlines for submissions are as follows:

Deadline for January Issue:  December 15

Deadline for April Issue:  March 15

Deadline for July Issue: June 15

Deadline for October Issue: September 15
